Gold Loan Shock: 96 Packets of Pledged Gold Vanish From Bank of India Branch in Uttar Pradesh, Three Officials Booked for Embezzlement and Fraud

A massive banking scandal has emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district after 96 packets of pledged gold allegedly disappeared from the Bharaul branch of Bank of India. Three officials have been booked for embezzlement and fraud as police investigate possible collusion, missing records and security lapses that have shaken customer confidence and triggered demands for compensation.

A major financial scandal has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district after 96 packets containing customers' pledged gold allegedly went missing from the Bharaul branch of Bank of India, triggering panic among account holders and raising serious concerns over banking security. The disappearance came to light when the branch vault was opened, sending shockwaves across the area and shaking public confidence in the institution.

Based on a complaint filed by Aditya Pratap Singh, Chief Manager of the Agra Regional Office of Bank of India, police have registered a case of embezzlement and fraud against three officials and launched an investigation. According to reports, the incident occurred at Bharaul village under the Araon Police Station area, where customers had deposited gold as collateral for availing gold loans.

The pledged ornaments were supposed to remain secure inside the bank vault. However, during an internal examination, officials discovered that 96 packets were missing. Dilip Kumar, the primary key holder of the gold safe, has been untraceable since May 27, 2026, and had reportedly disappeared without informing the bank. Since the gold safe can only be opened with two keys, operations related to gold loans came to a standstill due to the absence of the primary key.

Following the disruption, the regional office initiated an inquiry. On June 15, 2026, Senior Manager for Security Ankit Janhu and Sushil Kumar from the Ghiror branch were sent from Agra to conduct an inspection. A duplicate key was arranged and the safe was opened in the presence of panel advocate Shivkumar Sharma while monitoring closed-circuit television footage. Upon opening the vault, the inspection team discovered that 96 packets of pledged gold were missing.

Sandeep Yadav is a resident of Shikohabad, Dilip Kumar belongs to Basgaon in Etawah district, and Naresh Kumar is from the Sadabad area of Hathras district.

According to a report by Business Standard, the bank administration has expressed suspicion of embezzlement. The exact value of the missing gold has not yet been officially declared, but estimates suggest losses ranging from several lakhs to crores of rupees. Investigators are examining closed-circuit television footage, bank records and the role of officials involved. Authorities are also probing the possibility of collusion.

The incident has sparked anger among customers and raised fears of a collapse in trust in the banking system. Concerned account holders have started visiting the branch to verify the status of their pledged valuables. Police officials have stated that the case will be solved soon. The incident has exposed serious weaknesses in banking security mechanisms and highlighted the consequences of negligence or suspected misconduct by bank officials. Customers are now demanding prompt compensation, while further revelations are expected once the investigation is completed.
